Tuesday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m.,

Lobby of the Legislative Office Building (behind the State House),
33 N. State St., Concord.

VISIBILITY ACTION for Public School Funding

Encourage NH senators and representatives who are working on the budget to include meaningful education funding measures to help struggling school districts and overburdened property taxpayers.

Hold a sign identifying your community, along with a message about funding—e.g., “Pittsfield kids have waited too long; find the $$$,” “Berlin students deserve a fair shake; fully fund our schools.”  We’ll have materials to make signs if you aren’t able to bring one with you.

Please let us know if you’re coming by emailing schoolfundingfairness@gmail.com, and include your town/city in your email.  We’re hoping to have people from many different communities throughout the state.

What to expect:  After gathering in the lobby of the Legislative Office Building, we’ll go upstairs to stand outside the meeting room where members of the Budget Committee of Conference will be arriving to negotiate differences between the House and Senate proposed budgets, including provisions about school funding.  As the meeting is about to begin, we’ll file in to observe, using our presence to remind members of the committee that citizens from all corners of the state expect them to solve the school funding crisis.  (No public input is permitted during these meetings.  Once we’re in the meeting room, we’ll serve as silent witnesses.)

If possible, plan to stick around for a couple of hours.  Although the Committee of Conference is scheduled to meet at 10:00, sometimes these meetings start significantly later than planned.  But your presence is valuable no matter how long you can stay.

Upper Valley (Lebanon) Senior Center
10 Campbell St, Lebanon

The Upper Valley Dems is privileged to have Groundswell Change,  a diversity-based leadership team,  present at our June program.

Groundswell Change, founded in 2018, is led by Brian and Theodosia Cook, as an effort to formalize thought leadership and facilitated learning around Diversity, Inclusion and Equity principles.  Theodosia Cook, recently named director of the Campus Climate and Culture Initiative (C3I) at Dartmouth, and Brian Cook, a recent graduate of the Tuck School of Business and will facilitate a conversation that will provide an opportunity to gain unique insight into institutional racism and the ways it operates.

This conversation is intended to introduce participants to the meaningful distinctions between interpersonal bigotry and institutional racism. It will allow participants the opportunity to ask questions and engage on difficult topics that impact our society.

This program is part of the Upper Valley Democrats monthly program series supported by a NEGEF grant and is open to the public. Bring your friends.

Moderators:

Theodosia Cook is a nationally recognized leader in the education space. Starting her career as an educator and teacher leader, she has deep experience with youth and adult learning, labor relations/union advocacy, as well as community engagement.

Brian Cook has built a career spanning the public, private and social sectors. He held a national leadership role with Teach for America where he recruited talented college graduates to teach, built a nationally recognized Black Male Recruitment Initiative and built marketing campaigns centered on diversity, inclusion and equity trainings.

Presidential Candidate Debate Watch Parties! June 26 & 27.

Because there are so many candidates, there will be two nights of debates. Half the candidates will take the stage on Wednesday, June 26th, and the other half on Thursday, June 27th.

Candidates learn which night they will debate on Thursday night, but campaigns are organizing watch parties now.

Read Democratic debate deadline: What we know and don’t know, for the latest info on who has made it and who is hoping to make the debates.

We will update our Debate Party Watch list as we get confirmation.

There also is a Virtual Town Hall this Friday 6/14 with Cory from 5:30-7 p.m., and the location is currently TBD (searching for a venue with a TV, WiFi, and can fit 5-10 people). Cory will be in a Google hangout with all of the organizers teams to answer questions. It’s going to be a very good setting to get time with Cory for a deep dive on his plans for this campaign.
